Surgical Site Infection – 75th Percentile of Surgery Duration

Surgical Site Infection – 75th Percentile of Surgery Duration

Surgery duration, ASA and wound class are used to calculate the SSI Basic Risk Index for each operative procedure. A point is allocated if for each of the following:

  1. ASA is ≥ 3,
  2. the wound class is contaminated or dirty
  3. Operation lasting more than t hours where t is the approximate 75th percentile of the duration of surgery for that particular operative procedure. That is, 75% of the operations for that procedure were shorter than t hours and 25% were longer than t hours.

Using more recent data VICNISS has revised the 75th percentile duration for some procedure groups, see table below:

Procedure Group

75th percentile surgery duration before 1/7/22

75th percentile surgery duration after 1/7/22
