Surgical Antibiotic Prophylaxis update

Victorian public and private hospitals performing surveillance for healthcare-associated infections and relevant processes are reminded that from July 2021, VICNISS Surgical Antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP) reporting will apply updated compliance definitions on:

  • Antibiotic choice
  • Timing (including redosing for procedures ≥4 hours) and
  • Duration

In addition, dosing compliance for procedures where cefazolin is optimal (e.g. hip and knee prostheses, coronary artery bypass graft) will be reported.

Changes to data collection for surgical prophylaxis from January this year will allow data on treatment antibiotics that patient is prescribed in 24-hours prior to the procedure to be included in compliance assessment of antibiotic choice. Available in the SAP module is summary information on Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis: Timing of redosing interval for commonly used agents (based on Therapeutic Guidelines: Antibiotics and expert consensus) on which compliance with redosing will be assessed.

Infection Control services can approve members of their Antimicrobial Stewardship team to access VICNISS reports.
