SSI Module - New data field clarification

SSI Module – clarification of new data field which states: “in addition to prophylaxis (listed above), was patient receiving antibiotics prior to surgery?”

The instructions state: Select Yes if the patient was receiving any other antibiotics prior to surgery (e.g. for treatment of current infection). Select No if patient was not receiving other antibiotics prior to surgical antibiotic prophylaxis. If the information is not available (e.g. lost drug chart) select not available (N/A).

To clarify further this only includes antibiotics that the patient is currently receiving per their drug chart at the time of surgery.  There is no expectation that you would review their medical history for an extended period prior to surgery. Please see below for examples:

Scenario

In addition to prophylaxis, was patient receiving antibiotics prior to surgery?

01.02.19 - Emergency admission, pneumonia – start ceftriaxone

09.02.19 - Ceftriaxone ceased

13.02.19 - Surgery

NO - ceftriaxone course is discontinued prior to surgery

01.02.19 - Emergency admission, pneumonia – start ceftriaxone

04.02.19 - Surgery

09.02.19 – Ceftriaxone ceased

YES - ceftriaxone course is still continued at the time of surgery

The intention of this additional information is to better assess adequacy of surgical antibiotic prophylaxis that the patient received where the patient is already receiving antibiotic treatment for established infection.
