2006 TGA Routine Antibiotic Prophylaxis Recommendations - Summary

This quick reference in table form for recommended surgical antibiotic prophylaxis was provided in the
VICNISS eBulletin April 2007 at the request of several hospitals. Note
that this is a summary of the guidelines and is not intended as a substitute.
“Duration greater than 24 hours” field: Just a reminder that this field is intended to
assess where antibiotics are continued for longer than recommended after surgery. In cases where several doses are administered after surgery, e.g., 3 x 8 hourly, and this goes for slightly longer than 24 hours,
please tick “No” in response to this question. |

Revised CLABSI Definition

As advised in the VICNISS eBulletin April 2008, VICNISS decided
to adopt the same revisions to the CLABSI definition as NHSN, effective as of 1 July 2008. The new definition is provided in version 6
of the Surveillance Manual above. For your information, the full defintion is provided here,
which includes a list of FAQs and a comparison of the old definitions with the new, including a flow chart. |
