Thanks to everyone for their participation during the year, for attending training, submitting data, contributing to the CLABSI masterclass, submitting data, coming along to journal clubs, submitting data, calling us back and following up those pesky data errors, submitting data, assisting us with SHIINe development, submitting more data, contributing to development of bundles and new modules and finally submitting yet more data. All of this is very much appreciated.

Please note that the VICNISS Coordinating Centre will be closed during the Christmas and New Year period.

If you are interested in hosting a Gold Standard Hand Hygiene Workshop at your Health Service or would like assistance with training general auditors or an update /refresher workshop for previously trained auditors please contact: jennifer.bradford @ mh.org.au, or phone 9342 3901.

Hand Hygiene data for Period 1 2012 is due by Friday 30th March 2012. Data is not able to be entered into the HHCApp after midnight on the due date so allow for unexpected circumstances and don’t leave it until the last minute to enter your data.

TYPE 1 & 2 Surveillance – Clarification Required for Completion of SAB Data Form

Are you answering the following question correctly?

What was the main patient classification in the 48hrs prior to S.aureus blood culture being collected? (Acute, rehabilitation, mental health, palliative care, alcohol & drug, geriatric evaluation & management or other)

A patient admitted with a SAB from home should be classified as acute as no other patient classification applies. A resident from a residential aged care bed/facility should be assessed the same as 'from own home'.

If the patient fitted two classifications in the 48 hours prior to SAB choose the one where most time was spent. For example, a patient in a rehabilitation ward for one week develops signs and symptoms of sepsis, is then transferred to an acute bed where a blood culture is collected 3 hours later. This patient's classification is rehabilitation as 45 of the last 48 hrs were spent in the rehabilitation ward.
