Farewell to Phil

As most of you will be aware, in June we farewelled Phil Russo, who has been our Deputy/Operational Director since the VICNISS Coordinating Centre began in early 2002. Phil has left to take up a position as the National Hand Hygiene Project Manger, which means that a lot of you will still have contact with him in his new role. We would like to acknowledge the enormous contribution Phil made to the establishment and ongoing success of the Coordinating Centre and we wish him all the best for the future. We also hope that he keeps in touch so that we stay up-to-date on the latest Shane Warne stories and how Fraser Gehrig is getting on with his arthritic hands!

VICNISS Quarterly Reports - Important Changes

The most recent reports published were for Quarter 1 (Jan/Feb/Mar) 2008.
Reports for Quarter 2 (Apr/May/Jun) 2008 are due to be published in September and will remain in the current format.
However, as from Quarter 3 (Jul/Aug/Sep) 2008, the VICNISS quarterly and year to date (YTD)reports format will change to reflect the financial year calendar in line with Performance Indicators.
For example, July/Aug/Sep 2008 will be referred to as Q1, 2008/2009. This will mean that reports will look different to previous reports.

  • Revised Type 1 VICNISS Surveillance Manual v6

The revised VICNISS Type 1 Surveillance Manual is NOW available on the VICNISS website. It is important that all VICNISS Type 1 participants become familiar with the new manual as there have been a number of significant changes which will come into effect as of the 1st July 2008. Hospitals should also use the updated surveillance forms (in the revised manual) commencing 1st July 2008.

A brief summary of some of the changes in Type 1 Surveillance Manual:

  • Surveillance activities divided into two distinct modules:
    1) Procedure associated module (section 5) - SSI surveillance
    2) Device associated modules (section 6) - includes CLABSI, PLABSI, VAP, haemodialysis
  • Section 4 - VICNISS Participation Requirements
    * VICNISS performance indicators and notice of inability form included in manual
  • Section 5 - Procedure Associated Module
    * New updated forms to be used from 1st July 2008
  • Section 6 - Device Associated Module
    * Location of attribution and Transfer rule defined (section 6.2.4)
    * CLABSI definitions changed - criterion 2b has been deleted "common skin contaminant is cultured from at least one blood culture from a patient with an intravascular line, and the physician institutes appropriate antimicrobial therapy" (see section 6.2.7)
    * More explanatory notes re CLABSI definitions are provided ( see section 6.2.7)
    * Temperature guide for patients ≤ 1 year of age has been revised ( see section 6.2.7, note 5)
  • Section 6.4 - Haemodialysis Surveillance
    * New module commencing July 1st 2008.
  • Section 7 – Forms
    * ALL VICNISS forms have been revised and should be used as of 1st July 2008.

By request, the VICNISS Coordinating Centre is sending out this manual in an electronic form only. If hospitals require a hard copy the manual can be printed from the VICNISS website.

  • Haemodialysis Surveillance Module

Commencing 1st July 2008 (Quarter 1, 2008/2009) VICNISS has introduced one new module for dialysis surveillance: Haemodialysis (HD). Two workshops were recently held to introduce and discuss participation requirements for this module. The Haemodialysis surveillance module (including forms) is included in the newly revised VICNISS Type 1 Surveillance Manual.

If you wish to participate in the haemodialysis surveillance module please remember to include this in your annual surveillance plan. If the facility has not previously participated in VICNISS surveillance activities you will need to notify VICNISS of your plan to participate and a hospital code will be generated for the facility.

If you have any enquiries relating to this new module please contact Judy Brett, phone 9342 2605.

Type 2 Surveillance Update

For the introduction of the new Performance Indicators, process indicator modules are either optional or required during the 2008/2009 surveillance period dependent on your hospital category. For small and medium hospitals, the process indicator modules are optional. For large hospitals, the ‘Surgical Antibiotic Prophylaxis’ module (as a minimum) is required.

As of 1st July 2008, the Type 2 hospitals participating in the ‘Outpatient Haemodialysis Event’ module are to use the new data collection forms, which will also be used by the Type 1 hospitals. Similarly, the Type 2 hospitals participating in the ‘Surgical Site Infection’ module are to use the new data collection forms to be used by the Type 1 hospitals. These forms are available on the VICNISS Type 2 Surveillance Manual page of the VICNISS website. Please insert the forms into your Type 2 manual (Version 10).

SHIINe Software Update

The completed version of the VICNISS Type 1 surveillance software known as SHIINe is due to be released by the developers in the next few days. Again we thank the teams at both St Vincents Hospital led by Jo Cocks, and Barwon Health led by Jill Low who have provided so much of their time in the SHIINe pilot.

VICNISS is in the final negotiation stages with a company to complete the rollout of SHIINe to the remaining 25 hospitals. Once this negotiation is complete and a contract has been signed, we will be contacting each hospital to jointly develop a rollout plan. The rollout will take into consideration other major IT projects that your hospital may be undertaking e.g. Healthsmart. We would be pleased to hear from hospitals eager to participate in the first stage.
