Type 1 update

Results of Satisfaction Survey
Many thanks to all those who responded to the Type 1 Satisfaction survey. We appreciate the time taken to complete and send back in. We had a response rate of 61%. Response to note include continued frustration with the reporting process and timeframes. Obviously we are working on the associated issues regarding Reports with the development of SHIINe. Requests for more onsite visits and education workshops and forums will be implemented into our future work plans. For a summary of results, please click here.

Please ensure that you are using the most recent version of ALL data forms, if you are using forms dated prior to 2005 the form you are using is well past it’s use by date.

From 1st January 2007 the VSHN and CRAN forms will no longer be in use and have been replaced by the Standard Type Surgical Site Form 1.1 which has also been updated.

Type 2 update

Just for your information…..

On the Multi Resistant Organism (MRO) data collection form for the data-field ‘detection’ one of the following 4 statements is to be ticked.

1. MRO infection first detected at this hospital greater than or equal to 48hours after (this) admission
2. MRO infection first detected at this hospital within 48 hours of (this) admission
3. Unresolved MRO infection previously detected at this hospital
4. Unresolved MRO infection previously detected at another hospital (includes direct transfers).

On the VICNISS reports, MRO infections are reported as ‘After 48 hours’ (statement 1 data) or ‘Present on admission or within 48 hours’ (statements 2, 3 &4 data) It is anticipated that when the database (or sample size) is large enough, statements 2,3 & 4 data will be separately reported.

Software Focus Group

On Wednesday 24th January the first surveillance software Focus Group was conducted at the office of the developers Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing (VPAC). Six Infection Control staff from Western, Geelong and St Vincent’s hospitals were invited to attend for the first look at the new application Safer Hospitals Integrated Information Network (SHIINe).

The main objective of this focus group was to provide some initial feedback to the developers on workflows in the program and to assist us in identifying educational needs for the implementation at pilot sites and then larger roll out.

The pilot of SHIINe is commencing at St Vincent’s Hospital and Geelong Hospital over the next month. A review of this pilot will be conducted in late April, with roll out to other sites to occur after any amendments are made.

SHIINe has been designed to meet the needs of those undertaking Type 1 surveillance activities. For Type 2 activities, our own IT staff have been working hard on developing web pages for data entry over the internet. The first module that will allow for web data entry will be the Occupational Exposure module. Once this is complete, Infection Control staff undertaking this module will be able to enter data directly into a website, removing the need for paper forms and faxing! We hope to have this available to participating hospitals by mid March 2007.

These are very exciting activities for all participating hospitals. Both will assist Infection Control staff undertaking VICNISS Surveillance by decreasing the time taken to undertaken surveillance.

VICPA/VICNISS Journal Club

The VICPA/VICNISS Journal Club was initiated with the aim of providing a forum for infection control professionals to more widely engage with literature and published data in the field. To date we have had two meetings with more than 30 participants attending each session. Evaluations demonstrate that attendees value the information presented and, the ability to discuss contemporary issues presented in the literature reviews.

The next journal club will be devoted to discussing the literature pertaining to influenza and healthcare worker immunization. Presenters and articles for the next journal club meeting which will be held at Caulfield Medical Centre on Friday 13th April 2007 will be available on both the VICNISS and VICPA websites: (www.vicpa.org.au).

In 2007 VICPA & VICNISS will be co-hosting 5 sessions held bi-monthly that will be held at hospitals around Melbourne. Click here for further Journal Club dates and venues http://www.vicpa.org.au/Default.aspx?c=367&ct=3

For further enquiries please contact VICPA Education Officer, Lorraine Wilson at lorrainew @ fmh.com.au or Claire Boardman at VICNISS.
